There's nothing better than comfortable clothes...maybe that speaks to my age..but it's hard to look special if clothes are uncomfortable...so, I stitched up this fab tunic from some soft, homespun looking fabric, left the seams raw so they would fringe when washed, and made it extra large so it would fit almost everyone..some loose, some just right, and left it in it's ragged, tattered, shabby state so one can just toss it in the washer on delicate, tumble it dry and pop it on. Looks fab over leggings..or at 31 inches long could be a mini dress. Bust measures 56. See it at sheerfab.etsy.com

Painted Denim Bag

Everyone loves denim, and it’s a great fabric to work with, but sometimes it needs a little jazzing up. I recycled a pair of jeans into this fab bag with paint, a big floppy painted flower, loop and button closure and shoulder straps. Check it out at sheerfab.etsy.com

Halloween doesn't have to be all black and orange anymore. I think happy colors will work just as well, so I've added lots of color to my new Halloween sweater with an appliqued girl with multi-color scrap hair. This is a plus size made of fairly large slubby weave acylic and wool yarn that's woven really loose so it's soft and stretchy. A really special Halloween sweater for Trick or Treating. On a recent thrifting trip, my most favorite thing to do when I have a little time, I found this darling 100 percent pure linen skirt in this great brown fall color. It has panels that give it a flouncy, swingy style with an asymmetrical swirley hemline. The fabric feels so great and the color is perfect for my upstyling with off white vintage lace down the front panel and a cute little lace rose at the waist. I've listed it on etsy.

IT’S FINISHED AND IT’S FAB!!

I’ve added a vintage hand crocheted doily to the lower front and a row of lace around the hem, plus two rows of lace on the bodice and more lace appliques. It’s now ready for the blushing bride and it’s exquisite!! Hope she loves it as much as I enjoyed doing the make-over.

Started work on the front..it has to be extra special. So far have added this luscious ragg rose with lace and muslin long fringe. The muslin is appliqued with satin hearts made from fabric from the sleeve additions. I think the dress is beginning to look fabulous..but there's more to come.

The sleeves seemed to call for a bit of updating, so added panel of lace and there were some faded spots on the cuffs that lace appliques covered nicely.

OK, work has begun on the transformation of "the dress". First I had to do something about the plain back. I thought it called for a lace panel with ruffled edge and lace roses all over. I've used four different laces from off white to ecru. The dress a satin ecru and the different colors of lace give it a wonderful blend of different shades. This picture shows the work so far. Stay tuned for the next step in this fab makeover.

A wonderful customer is getting married! She has her mother's wedding dress and wanted to incorporate it into her own wedding. But it didn't have quite the look she wanted for her big day. Her taste runs more to my SheerFab "shabby look" with ruffles, lace, ribbons and pazazz. So, she asked if I could do a "do-over". Here is the original dress..check my next post for the first step in the "new retro look".

BACK AFTER THE TORNADO

We were out of commission for a few weeks after a tornado struck us in late April, but we're back now again making pretties for our etsy shops. Check out my new listing with this really chic tunic upcycled from a special sea green sweater and cotton lace. I like how it looks with jeans...or could be dressed up for special occasions. THE WORLD NEEDS MORE CROCHET & LACE

Back when our Moms and Grandmothers did crocheting, embroidery,sewing, knitting and quilting the world seemed a safer place, and certainly more beautiful because of all their wonderful creations. Some even did tatting. No one in my family did tatting, so I never learned to do that..and now it's almost a lost art. But it's one of the most beautiful. So, thinking about that, I decided that what the world needs is more crochet, lace, trims, fringes and stuff. So, I dug into my stash and used my finds to create this fab spring coat by using a 3X grey ribbed sweater and junking it up with all sorts of laces, vintage crochet, fringes, raw edge cotton muslin and even vintage buttons. Then I dipped it in dye to coordinate the colors, which in this case needed to be shades of grey to work with the sweater body. It's lightweight enough for cool spring days or air conditioned summer nights. The sleeves are extra long with stretch cuffs that can be pushed up for a really fab look. I love using bits and pieces and recycled sweaters to create great new looks and not adding to our overfilled landfills. I'm posting it on etsy and also taking it to our local arts and craft show coming up the middle of April.

Hurray! It's Spring!

With today the first day of Spring...we can now believe it's really here. Time to get out the warm weather wear! Time to get going on great new listings for etsy! Actually, we're all working on stock for our local Art and Craft Show coming up in a few weeks. We've been doing it for years and it's a really special event..the longest running Art and Craft Show in the state. It's a two day show, Saturday and Sunday, but the crowds are huge on Saturday and we usually almost sell out on that day, Sunday is more leasurely, giving us time to check out some of the other booths' merchandise and see what's new and interesting. All three of us, Yellikelli, Cadiwompus and SheerFab, have adjoining booths, so we look like one great big boutique. It's a fun weekend..wish you all could come join us...Art on the Lake, April 16 and 17..in Lake Guntersville.

ANTS IN THE HOUSE

I had been plagued for sometime with ants invading my house, especially the kitchen. I had tried all the recommended solutions, short of actually using poisonous pesticides. I really didn't want to kill them, just get them to stay outside where they belong and I'm sure are more happy there than inside. And anyway I can't risk using something that might harm my three precious rescue kitties. So, I was checking Google for some helpful advice. A wonderful person had posted that she (he) used black pepper to deter ants from coming inside. I tried it..just sprinkled some around where the ants were...and within hours, no more ants! It's been a while now and haven't seen even one ant. I can't thank that person enough..such an easy harmless solution to an irritating problem. Thank you Google Person!!

Gathered up a bunch of my favorite fabs...muslin, cotton brocade, lace and fringe and decided they would make a sweet skirt for a Valentine party or a special spring garden party. The skirt has panels and panels of all the different fabrics with ruffles and handkerchief hems and seams with my signature raw edges. One panel features appliqued hearts, perfect for Valentine's Day. This skirt also has my "fits everyone" drawstring waist, so no need to worry about size. Check it out on etsy.

Christmas Day Snow In Dixie

Hey, Merry Christmas!!! It's really snowing here in Dixie...we hardly ever have snow here, especially on Christmas but we're getting it today. I'm somewhat North of Birmingham, Al, and this is the first time ever they're supposed to get snow on Christmas day, at least since records have been kept. It's really pretty, but here in the South we have a hard time getting around in it..I think people who have snow most of the time in winter laugh at us because we panic when it snows here. But its so pretty while it lasts. Happy Holidays everyone from Sheer Fab and Shabby Fab.

CREAM AND GREEN ENAMEL BAKEWARE

I was browsing in one of my favorite thrift stores yesterday and found this wonderful old enamel ware pan..the kind our moms used back in the 40s and 50s. This one is cream with green trim and was stuck under a table in the back, so had not been discovered and grabbed before I found it. I think the cream and green is from the 40's..so its definitely vintage. Its still in pretty good condition, inside is near perfect, but there are some chips around the edges. Enamel cookware was used in daily cooking back then before modern stainless and no stick became popular, so it was subject to some chips and dents..but this one has survived pretty intact. It came in several trim colors, white with red trim, that I'm told was from the 50's, and white with black trim. But I think the cream and green is my favorite. This one measures 9 by 14 inside and 9 3/4 by 15 3/4 overall. Has one hole in the handle for hanging if one would want to display it as a great kitchen decor collectible. A PINK CHRISTMAS TREE

I love pink Christmases. Red and green are fine and, of course, traditional. But I still love pink and pastels...they just seem so much happier. So,I added this pretty pink tree to a light green fleece top..and the scene needed snow, so that was accomplished with white paint snowflakes, and then a perky snowman with an aqua hat, which called for aqua Christmas balls on the tree. All in all, I think it turned out to be a really sweet pink Christmas. More on www.SheerFab.etsy.com.

LATEST JUNKED UP DUSTER

I have so much fun taking bits and pieces of fabric, yarn, lace and fringe and putting them together to create something someone will love. So, that's what I did to make this cool junked up duster coat. It was plain beige and not at all the fab colors needed to make the glamorous piece of art I visualized...so, get out the trusty dyes, or in this case, paints..and make it gorgeous. After that was accomplished, had to add more glitz..so, here come the laces, fringes, yarns, bits and pieces of fabric, trims and whatever available to create a OOAK fashion treat. CAT-a-gorically Speaking -The Cat's Meow

My live in buddies...five furry felines..four of which are rescues...have thought for a while that dogs get more publicity in blog-dom than cats do. So in honor of "Milhouse", my blue-eyed white, rescued from a church cemetery when he was just old enough to walk around, "Freddy Freeloader", who would eat food put out for him, but took weeks to trust me enough to let me pick him up, "Marshmallow", better known now as "Big Fat Marshey" who showed up at my front door as a baby, almost starved because someone had dumped him and his friend "Tucker", a black and white who arrived at about the same time, probably dumped with Marshmallow, and "Katie" the only girl and not a rescue, I decided to create a sensational cat item that would make them proud. So, what better to do than gather my scraps and sweaters and sew this fab feline coat. All five say they love it and hope you'll check out all the pics on etsy so you can see each one.

I found this great vintage collar at a church thrift sale..and posted it on my ShabbyFab etsy site for reclaimed treasures and within three hours a great customer grabbed it. I thought it would be terrific over a sweater..or maybe a dress. Don't know how she plans to use it...but I thought it was such a cool item.

My Latest Scrapping Venture

It's amazing how many fabric scraps collect from my sewing projects. Especially from altered and recycled sweaters. Always looking for new ideas to use them.. I'm passionate about recycling and never, never want to throw anything into the trash, ending up in our overfilled landfills. I know fabric will deterorate, unlike the tons of plastic we throw away, but still I can't let my precious fabric scraps end up there. I use many of them in my upstyled sweaters, skirts, coats,etc...but needed new items to use them on. I love sweats...I think they're our favorite wearable..so grabbed a pair and started scrapping. They turned out so cool. Check out the pic on the right. These were posted on etsy..but a wonderful customer in California snapped them up..but keep checking..I'm still scrapping!

Vintage Crocheted Table Cloth

Things have been so busy around here lately, haven't had much time for thrifting, I've been working on a wholesale order for a store, and getting stock to another customer who is doing an art show, but had a few minutes Friday and stopped at a friend's tag sale. Look what I found! She was selling this gorgeous vintage crocheted tablecloth. I thought it would be so pretty for a holiday dinner with a solid cloth underneath to match the occasion. Many people don't have regular dinners together anymore, but they do get together for special occasions and this would be perfect. What do you think?

Recycled Sweater and Velveteen Coat

I've had a collection of velveteen pieces for sometime and didn't have any ideas for using them. But decided they would be lovely made into a fall coat. So, I used a tan plus size cotton sweater for the top and added the velveteen panels for length. Then added a hood of velveteen and did covered buttons to close. I think it worked out quite well. I gathered a group of vintage crochet doilies, lace and pieces of vintage fringe and stitched them all over an oversize cotton chenille coat that I had made, then dyed it all in multi colors to create this charming one of a kind coat. It's way oversized purposelly so that anyone can wear it..wonderfully loose and comfortable on some..and less loose and drapey on some...but oh so soft and cuddly. Check out the listing on etsy.

I was fortunate to find a stash of unbleached, organic cotton fabric that is so soft and cozy and makes the most comfortable, oversized big shirts. These seem to work best if they're large and loose..so that anyone can feel good in them. When you've had a hard day and need a hug, instead of comfort food, these work as comfort shirts..because they're so soft and cuddley and cozy and warm. They can be made in all sizes, but big and loose seems to work best. Check out the listing on etsy.

Patched Up Fall Jacket

With all the cutting and sewing around here, I've created lots and lots of scrap fabrics, so I gathered up a batch and thought they would work great for a new fall patched up jacket. Hey...here's my latest etsy listing on www.SheerFab.etsy.com. We did another photo session with my cute model yesterday...and I think the pictures turned out fabulous! This is my latest creation useing recycled sweaters to upstyle into really charming artwear. In the one pictured I've used a vintage Ralph Lauren cotton knit sweater and added panels from two other sweaters to get the correct length. I love creating out of recyclables...the new items are so much more appealing than the originals ever were.

This little Ice Cream Truck is one of my latest fab finds. It's made by Metro and is dated 1993. It really works..with music and the driver yelling Ice Cream!! Ice Cream!!! Just like in real life. We all had a great America's Birthday yesterday! After 234 years she's still the greatest country on the planet! What a blessing to have been placed here. I wanted to show you the neat sculpture I found on our Friday junkin' trip last week (see latest picture). It's a boy and fish fountain that I'm going to add to the garden. It looks a bit battered but that just means someone has loved it before and now it's found a new home and will be loved again by me, the pond fish and the garden birds and frogs.

This morning the Fab Four (three girls and a Shihtzu) got up early and went out on our usual Friday morning search for discarded treasures. And look what I found (check out the picture)...I loved the little heart-shaped, vintage, crocheted pincushion. It would be divine to use for brooches and jewelry pins..and the two Western plaques would be perfect in a Cowboy or Cowgirl themed nursery..and the brownware pitcher and saucer marked Japan would be darling holding a small bouquet by a cottage bedside. It was another fun outing, plus, as a treat, we get to have breakfast out.

Hey, look what I found!! We went junkin' again, we usually do this early Friday mornings, and stopped at a sale that had these five vintage beaded baskets for sale. I just couldn't resist them. The woman's mother had used them as holiday decorations, but the daughter had them for sale. The mother had stuffed them with tiny little white lights and when plugged in and lighted they were just amazing! What a wonderful display for Christmas...or any holiday. I'm posting a picture so you can see how innovative the mother was. I love them! They really brightened my day. Can't decide if I want to hang on to them, or list them in ShabbyFab etsy shop. I love "cheap frills from the 50's" and this little beaded safety pin basket I discovered at a church yard sale is a sparkly reminder of 'making do'. Some reports say that perhaps Girl Scouts started making them after World War II but these odd home made goodies still turn up occasionally at tag sales. It was a way to use up piles of safety pins and colorful plastic beads. Mary Englebreit's Home Companion wrote "the bead baskets are quirky, but you can see how much love was invested in the process of making them". One collector said "they're kind of wacky and totally useless, but I just love the way they look". Their shape reminds her of something Scarlett O'Hara might have carried to the barbecue. The fab four, Suzi, Kelly, Cadley and Clemmi got up super early today and went yard saleing. We found two fantastic ones...so we spent hours tumbling thru the jumble of interesting stuff and came home with our SUV so loaded we could hardly fit ourselves in to drive home. Clemmi (our Shihtzu) was so exhausted we had to stop for breakfast. Actually, the only thing she cares about is the food unless she can find a new squeaky toy..and water, she has to have a drink often on these hot days in the South and of course, everyone commenting on how pretty she is. Anyway, we came home happy with all our junk...and I'll be posting some of mine on my new etsy site ShabbyFab this weekend, so visit sometime soon to see our fab buys. EXPRESS YOUR OPINION THURSDAY

I think Thursdays should be " express your opinion day". And today my opinion is (ta-da):..I AM SO OVER ANYTHING MADE IN CHINA! Nothing I see that has that label makes my heart sing. Maybe that's why I love vintage things so much. It's comforting to know that the things one loves have been loved down thru the years by so many other people. Vintage items have developed a soul because they have been loved so much and they never lose their ability to make one's days just a little bit happier. Some people have never experienced the thrill of discovering some precious object in a dusty thrift store or yard sale and have their heart beat just a little bit faster..expecially if the found object is pink! I think it's sad that the throw-away merchandise that stacks store shelves in all it's plastic glory can't even begin to cause even a slight flutter. The same happy feelings belong to hand made also...anything handmade has a special quality that mass produced can't touch. So, vintage or handmade...it's sooo much better.

I've always loved Wednesdays...middle of the week...and not far from the weekend and another chance to go looking for more pretty vintage stuff...or maybe I'll find a great sweater to turn into a sweet jacket with trims, buttons, and extra special touches to make it delicious. Right now, I'm making my little posh rose pins to fill an order from one of the stores that carry my SheerFab clothing. These are made from muslin that I hand dye into sherbert colors for spring and summer and jewel tones for fall and winter. Yesterday was sale day at one of the local thrift stores and I found a wonderful old mirror that works perfectly in my bathroom...and an old chalkboard that we'll use as an information board at our shop this weekend. Come visit with us under the shadetrees at The House on Gunter...we'll have lots of goodies and "junk" for you to pick thru for your own great finds! Happy junkin'!!!

And you're so right about how wonderful children are..they're the best things that ever happen to anyone. But just wait until you have grandchildren!! They're two times great...I have 6. One is married...three are in college, one is a senior in high school and one is a seventh grader in middle school. Three of them are traveling to France later this month for a tour
of Paris! It's soooo exciting for them..but a little scary for me after last week's Air France disaster. I'll be so relieved when they get back home in early July. In the meantime, I'll just have to keep on junkin' to keep my mind occupied so not to worry.

O.K. I have to correct something. There are actually four of us that operate our shop and boutique...I left out our most enthusiastic member....our Darling Clementine...which is actually our Shih Tzu..but she insists on being counted as a full fleged member of our group. She always goes junkin' with us..and actually picks out her own treasures and brings them home. But we have yet to convince her to sell any of her loot. Also, I'm working on pictures to let some of my junk out of the trunk so all can see. Bear with me..they're coming..I promise.

It's Wednesday, and it's taken me since Sunday to get started on blogging. This is the first time I've blogged and everything is new to me. But I'm getting braver and think I can handle it. So, let me tell you something about me. I work at two radio stations that my family owns in our home town, but after work is done...I'm free to go thrifting..or junkin' as my granddaughter calls our trips. It's the most exciting part of our day...it's sooo much fun when we find really neat stuff! The three of us, me, my daughter and granddaughter, also have a shop that we stock with our best items for retail. This is so much fun! We don't have to feel guilty about our shopping trips because we sell everything except the items we just can't bear to part with. I also search for vintage and recyclable clothing that I can upstyle for our clothing boutique. These are cut, re-sewn, painted, appliqued, fringed, or just really cute-ed up into off-the-wall creations that are soooo different!
